Usefulness of a Hematology Diagnosis Decision Support System, FACULTY^(TM) in a University Hospital Laboratiry

Abstract

|
A preliminary report of evaluation for practical usefulness is presented on CoulterR FACULTYTM knowledge-based hematology diagnosis support system together with a research software for bone marrow diagnosis(Professor Belmonte).
FACULTYTM contains Professor Petrushka for peripheral blood analysis, Professor Fidelio for leukocyte surface marker study, electronic hematology textbook, case studies and printing and other utility programs.
FACULTYTM and Professor Belmonte were loaded to a stand alone pentium PC workstation with windows NT v3.51.
Pertinent data from 72 cases of leukemia, myeloproliferative disorder, myelodyslastic syndrome, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and others diagnosed previously by conventional methods were entered into the workstation ; and the interpretive diagnoses of the workstation were companed to the original diagnoses.
Diagnoses made by Professors Petrushka and Fidelio were agreeable to the original diagnoses.
Professor Belmonte, however, showed incomplete diagnoses on approximately 9.7% of the cases.
The electronic textbook proved to be an excellent reference source and a convinient educational tool as well.
In conclusion, FACULTY™ is a very useful program for practicing Clinical Pathologists.
However, Professor Belmonte requires an additional improvemens and it’s being done.
